Утром пришел Д. Д. [Дмитрий Дмитриевич] Смирнов, вызванный моею запискою, чтобы договориться с ним служить в 6 часов вечера всенощную у гр. Путятина, оттуда в 8 к Т. И. [Тертию Ивановичу] Филиппову. При нем принесли от Митрополита прочитать письма о. Анатолия и о. Владимира к нему. Очень милые письма. Письмо о. Владимира я дал г. Смирнову прочитать и другим, кому хочет; трактует письмо об Эдской Семинарии. Пришел о. Севастьян — пригласить завтра в половине 8-го служить литургию вместе с Владыкой. В 10 часов отправился к архитектору, рекомендованному Владыкой Исидором, Мих. [Михаилу] Арефьевичу Щурупову. (Просил монастырскую лошадь,— отказали сегодня,— все в разгоне).
In the morning, D. D. [Dmitry Dmitrievich] Smirnov came, summoned by the note I sent, requesting that he serve an all-night vigil at 6 p.m.
Putyatin arrived at 8 AM with T. I. [Tertius Ivanovich] Filippov. With him, they brought letters from the Metropolitan and Fr. Anatoly and Fr. Vladimir from the Metropolitan. Very nice letters.
I gave Fr. Vladimir's letter to Mr. Smirnov to read to others who wanted to; he explains the Edskaya Seminary in the letter.
Fr. Sevastian came and invited me to serve the Liturgy with Vladyka tomorrow at half past 5.
At 10 o'clock, I went to the architect Vladyka Isidore recommended, Mik. [Mikhail] Arefyevich Shchurupov. (I asked for a monastery horse, but they refused today; all of them are in use.)
На улице было около 20 градусов мороза. Страшно вспотел в шубе И. И. [Ивана Ивановича] Демкина, пока нашел Щурупова. Взобрался по указанной черной лестнице, прескверной,— а живет Щурупов очень хорошо, и принял — он и взрослые дети — мило.— Он предложил еще план храма круглого, как самый лучший в видах обеспечения против землетрясений. Завтра в 6 часов вечера обещался быть вместе со мною у Владыки, чтобы поговорить о храме.— От него заезжал взглянуть на греческую церковь внутри,— круглую,— но было заперто. В 12 ч. был у графини Александры Андреевны Толстой в Зимнем Дворце. Почти первый вопрос: «отчего нет книжки для сбора пожертвований? И мы поусердствуем, чем можем».
It was about 20 degrees below zero outside. I was sweating terribly in I. I. [Ivan Ivanovich] Demkin's fur coat until I found Shchurupov.
I climbed up the indicated back stairs, which were very nasty, but Shchurupov lives very well, and he and the grown-up children received me kindly.
He also proposed the plan of the round temple, as the best in terms of earthquake protection.
Tomorrow at 6 p.m., he promised to come with me to Vladyka's to talk about the temple.
I stopped by to take a look inside a Greek church, which was round, but it was locked.
At 12 p.m. I visited Countess Alexandra Andreevna Tolstoy at the Winter Palace. Almost her first question was: "Why isn't there a collection book? And we'll do our best."
Сидел два часа; были граф Перовский и его дочь,— сестра графини и еще какая-то дама; все расспрашивали и внимательно слушали об Японии и Миссии. Графиня — известная Редстокова почитательница,* и потому я не воздержался, чтобы несколько горячо не напасть на протестантов. На здоровье!
Дорога — не помощь, а истина Православия! Из Дворца отправился в Хоздйственное управление Св. Синода. Вл. Егор. [Владимир Егорович] Расторгуев, Ан. Гр. [Андрей Григорьевич] Ильинский, Остроумов и старик К. Илар. [Константин Иларионович] Платонов — казначей — приняли весьма любезно и тотчас же выдали 1500 р., пожертвованные на Миссию из Киево-Печерской Лавры и Почаевской Лавры и хранившиеся там до востребования; я взял их, чтобы вместе с 1000 руб. от граф. [графини] Ламберт, 925 руб.— на книги, привезенные еще в Японию М. А. [Марией Александровной] Черкасовою, 500 р. от Митрополита Исидора, с дополнением недостающего до 4-х тысяч из пожертвования о. Иосифа Сахарова,— всего 4 тысячи руб. отослать к о. Анатолию чрез о. Ф. [Федора] Быстрова,— каковые все суммы и сдал ему — прежде и сегодня; — а завтра или послезавтра он отошлет их в Японию.
I sat for two hours; there were Count Perovsky and his daughter, the Countess's sister, and another lady; they all asked and listened attentively about Japan and the Mission. The Countess is a well—known admirer of Redstock,* and therefore, I did not refrain from attacking the Protestants somewhat vehemently. You're welcome! What is valuable, though, is not my help, but the truth of Orthodoxy!
From the Palace, I went to the Administration of the Holy Synod, Vl. Egor. [Vladimir Egorovich] Rastorguev, An. Gr. [Andrey Grigorievich] Ilyinsky, Ostroumov and the old man K. Ilar. [Konstantin Ilarionovich] Platonov— the treasurer, very kindly received me, and immediately gave 1,500 rubles, which had been donated to the Mission from the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra and Pochaev Lavra and stored there on demand; I took this, along with 1,000 rubles from the Count. [Countesses] Lambert, 925 rubles for the books for Japan from M. A. [Maria Alexandrovna] Cherkasova, 500 rubles from Metropolitan Isidore, with the addition of the missing up to 4 thousand from the donation of Fr. Iosif Sakharov.
The total was 4 thousand rubles.
I sent it to Fr. Anatoly through O. F. [Fedor] Bystrov, — which I handed over all the sums to him — before and today; — and tomorrow or the day after tomorrow he will send them to Japan.
На пути к о. Федору купил в Синодальной лавке Служебник и Каноник, а в бумажной лавке взял прошнурованную книгу для пожертвований и купил календарь Гоппе. От Ф. [Федора] Николаевича отправился к гр. Е. Е. Ламберт, чтобы поклониться праху ее мужа. Читали — по русскому православному обычаю Псалтирь, и в комнате, где тело графа Иосифа,— все весьма,— он под кисеей, в генеральском мундире, кругом подсвечники — наши православные в трауре, и несколько родных. Доложили графине; она вышла; много плакала, рассказывая, какой он добрый человек был, как мирно скончался, без боли и страданий, хотя у него было сужение пищепроводного канала, так что он мог пить только молоко,— болезнь мочевого пузыря и печени; исповедался и приобщился у Патера, ибо был католик. Жаль было смотреть на рыдающую графиню, вспоминавшую, как мирно она прожила с ним 37 лет, и вспоминавшую при этом еще о рановременной смерти своих детей.
On the way to Fr. Fedor, I bought a Service Book and a Canon at the Synodal Store, and at the paper store, I took a laced book for donations and bought a Goppe calendar.
From F. [Fedor] Nikolaevich, I went to Mrs. E. E. Lambert to pay my respects to her husband. We read the Psalter according to Russian Orthodox custom, and in the room where Count Joseph's body is, everything is very good. He is under a muslin, in a general's uniform, and candlesticks are all around—our Orthodox are in mourning, as are several relatives.
The Countess was informed; she went out; she cried a lot, telling him what a kind man he was, how he died peacefully, without pain or suffering, although he had a narrowing of the esophagus so that he could only drink milk. He had a bladder and liver disease. He had confessed and received communion from their priest, because he was a Catholic.
It was a pity to look at the sobbing Countess, remembering how peacefully she had lived with him for 37 years and, at the same time, recalling the premature death of her children.
В то же время она выражала радостную надежду, что муж ее спасен. Послали за причетником, я отслужил панихиду. После — графиня позвала к себе и вручила 300 руб. на Миссию и 25 руб. на телеграмму в Японию, в Миссию, с просьбою, чтобы и там помолились за него. Я обещал молитву Миссии о графе, как нашем благотворителе. Телеграмма будет послана завтра, а деньги приобщатся к 4000, отсылаемым теперь. Заехал домой, чтобы пообедать, взять требу и — ко всенощной.
At the same time, she expressed the joyful hope that her husband was saved.
They sent for the clerk, and I served a panikhida [a memorial service].
After that, the Countess called me to her, and handed me 300 rubles for the Mission and 25 rubles for a telegram to Japan, to the Mission, asking them to pray for him there. I promised the Mission prayer for the Count as our benefactor.
The telegram will be sent tomorrow, and the money will be added to the 4,000 being sent now.
I stopped by my house to have lunch, pray, and go to the Vigil.
Во время просматривания предстоящей службы с Д. Д. [Дмитрием Дмитриевичем] Смирновым пришел художник, желающий отправиться в Японию, с письмом от Ф. И. [Федора Ивановича] Иордана,— Гавриил Павлович Кондратенко. Я назначил ему прийти в субботу утром, чтобы поговорить. По уходе его подали с почты письмо от Вар. Ал. [Варвары Александровны] Иордан с известием, когда быть у Исеева, а также с советом не давать решительного слова Кондратенко до личного разговора с Ф. Ив. К гр. Путятину запоздали на полчаса.
While getting ready for the upcoming service with D. D. [Dmitry Dmitrievich] Smirnov, an artist came who wanted to go to Japan with a letter from F. I. [Fyodor Ivanovich] Jordan: Gavriil Pavlovich Kondratenko. I made an appointment for him to come over on Saturday morning to talk.
After leaving, I received a letter from Varvara Alexandrovna from the post office. She informed me when to visit Iseev, as well as with advice not to give Kondratenko a decisive word before I spoke with F. Iv.
My visit to Gr. Putyatin was delayed by half an hour.
За всенощной читали и граф и граф. [графиня] Ольга Евфимовна — и очень хорошо. После всенощной — в карете графа отправились к Т. И. [Тертию Ивановичу] Филиппову — принял любезно, говорил о раскольниках, о греко-болгарском вопросе, порицал Митр. [Митрополита] Макария — за угодливость — по-моему очень резко и неприлично для светского сына Церкви,—дал прочитать свои статьи о греко-болгарском вопросе и раскольниках. Жена — простейшая — жаловалась на желудочный катар и угостила чаем с вареньем, а дочь в соседней комнате сочиняла ноты.— Карета графа привезла в 11 часов меня к Невскому монастырю, а Д. Дмитрича повезла доставить в Академию.
Both the Count and the Countess Olga Evfimovna read during the vigil — and very well.
After the All-night Vigil, they went to T. I. [Tertius Ivanovich] Filippov in the count's carriage. He received us kindly, talked about the schismatics, the Greek—Bulgarian question, and criticized Mitr. [Metropolitan] Makariya— for his obsequiousness — in my opinion, very sharply and indecently for a secular son of the Church—gave his articles on the Greek-Bulgarian question and schismatics to be read.
His wife, the simplest, complained of gastroenteritis and treated me to tea with jam, while my daughter was composing sheet music in the next room.
The count's carriage brought me to the Nevsky Monastery at 11 o'clock, and D. Dmitrich was taken to the Academy.
