Согласно данному графу Е. В. [Евфимию Васильевичу] Путятину обещанию, утром отправился в Гатчину, но на утренний поезд запоздал; совершенно как с Чичиковым; *** «не запоздай»,— говорил я кучеру лаврскому; «не запоздаю, как можно»,— отвечал он и не тревожил свою жирную лошадь; приехали на Варшавскую, при нас машина свистнула; «вишь ты, запоздали»,— хладнокровно заметил Семен; приехали на Балтийскую,—«запоздали»,—протянул он опять,—и повернул назад. Возвратившись, встретил несчастную какую-то у дверей: Боже, что за бедность и голь на Руси! «Семь раз на день ломает»... В ожидании послеобеденного поезда пошел разменять 96 английских фунтов, бывших у меня из Японии из курьерских. В одном месте давали 9 р. 20 к. за фунт, в другом 9 р. 35 к., в третьем 9 р., в четвертом, в банке, 9 р. 40 к. Здесь я и разменял. Заказал еще сто визитных карточек.
According to the promise given to Count E. V. [Evfimiy Vasilyevich] Putyatin, I went to Gatchina in the morning, but I was late for the morning train, just like with Chichikov; ***
"Don't be late," I told the coachman Lavrsky;
"I won't be late; we’ll get there as soon as possible," he replied and did not disturb his fat horse.
We arrived at Varshavskaya, and the car whistled in front of us;
"You see, we're late," Semyon remarked coolly; we arrived at Baltiyskaya,
"We're late," he drawled again and turned back. [check this entire dialogue]
When he returned, he met some unfortunate woman at the door: God, what poverty and destitution in Russia! "It breaks seven times a day."..
While waiting for the afternoon train, I went to exchange the 96 British pounds that I had from Japan with the courier. In one place, they gave 9 p. 20 K. per pound, in another 9 p. 35 K., in the third 9 p., in the fourth, in the bank, 9 p. 40 K. That's where I changed it.
I ordered another hundred business cards.

В час тридцать пополудни отправился в Гатчину. Граф и Ол. [Ольга] Евфимовна встретили на станции; остальное семейство на полдороге к дворцу, где живет граф. Что за милое семейство! Полтора дня прожил точно у родных. К несчастью, все время был болен простудою. Что за парк в Гатчине! Гуляли, но сыро и холодно было, и ломало меня так, что едва терпел.
At 1:30 in the afternoon, I went to Gatchina. The Count and Olga Evfimovna met at the station; the rest of the family were halfway to the palace where the Count lives. What a lovely family! I stayed with that family for a day and a half. Unfortunately, he was ill with a cold the whole time.
What a park in Gatchina! We walked, but it was damp and cold, and it broke me so much that I could barely stand it.

К 5-часовому поезду граф и Ольга Евф. [Евфимовна] опять до вокзала проводили меня. В Петербурге должен был зайти с железной дороги к В. И. Бахштейну, случайно встреченному при отправлении в Гатчину, в качестве кассира 1-го класса на вокзале; но не мог — спешил домой, чтобы сходить в баню, напиться малины и лечь в постель.
By the 5 o'clock train, Count and Olga Evf. [Evfimovna] escorted me to the station again. In St. Petersburg, I was supposed to go from the railway to V. I. Bakhshtein, whom I accidentally met on departure to Gatchina, as a 1st-class cashier at the station, but he could not — he hurried home to go to the sauna, drink raspberry tea and go to bed.

Баня и малина — чудесное лекарство. Проспал ночь без бреду и встал без головной боли. Только слабость. Написал письмо в Японию и приготовил к отсылке деньги по адресам о. Владимира. Но, кажется, нужно будет просидеть дома целый день, чтобы завтра быть здоровым. Ребятишки пред окнами шумят и резвятся, что напоминает Миссию: только ребятишки больше белоголовые, и мелюзга же такая, что заметил некоторых играющих еще в лошадок (час дня).
Going to the banya and drinking raspberry tea are wonderful medicines. I slept through the night without delirium and got up without a headache. Only weakness.
I wrote a letter to Japan and prepared to send the money to Fr. Vladimir. But it seems that I will need to stay at home all day tomorrow to be healthy.
The kids in front of the windows are making noise and frolicking, which reminds me of the Mission: only the kids are more bald-headed, and the little ones are such that I noticed some playing horses (one o'clock in the afternoon).
Всенощная, без звону, с Воздвиженья бывает в Духовской Церкви; отстоял там; митрополичьи певчие хуже, чем прежде бьши; басы довольно плохи; впрочем, когда весь хор поет, сильны. После всенощной позвал к себе о. Моисей слушать игру на фисгармонике и пение о. Вениамина, иеродиакона, регента хора монахов; артист; но Моисей мешал слушать болтовней.
The all-night vigil, without exception [check], has been held in the Spiritual Church [check] since the Exaltation; I stood there; the metropolitan choristers are worse than before; the basses are quite bad; however, when the whole choir sings, they are strong. After the vigil, Fr. Moses listens to the harmonica playing and singing of Fr. Benjamin, hierodeacon, regent of the monks' choir, an artist, but Fr. Moses prevents them from listening to the chatter.

Утром, когда писал статью для «Др. и Нов. Рос.» [Древняя и Новая Россия], помешала Ставиская Ан. Алекс, пришедшая с поручением от мат. [матушки] Евстолии — звать в монастырь посоветоваться касательно икон. Ставиская звала и в свой институт — посмотреть; была вместе с племянницей Катей — воспитанницей института, рожденной на Амуре в Хабаровске. После поздней обедни в Соборе зашел ко мне гимназист Сергей Соколов, жертвователь. Пообедали вместе. Приходил о. Арсений Афонский — принес несколько адресов благотворителей и советовал ездить с книжкой и тотчас же просить пожертвований.
In the morning, when I was writing an article for Ancient and New Russia, Stavisky Anna Alex came with an assignment from Matushka Eustolia — to invite me to the monastery to consult about icons. Staviskaia invited me to her institute to see; she was with her niece Katya, a pupil of the institute, born on the Amur River in Khabarovsk.
After a late Liturgy in the Cathedral, Sergei Sokolov, a high school student and a donor, came to see me. We had lunch together.
Fr. Arseny Afonsky came and brought several addresses of benefactors and advised me to travel with a book and immediately ask for donations.
Отправился в Новодевичий монастырь в два часа и там провел все время до половины 8-го. Слушали о Миссии. Что за добрые матушки! Обещали написать иконостас и для училищной Церкви в Миссийском доме, лишь только испрошу на то благословение Владыки Исидора. Остальное время до 10-ти вечера провел у гр. Путятина, где сначала застал только Ольгу Евфимовну. Как она желает служить в Миссии и как полезна она была бы, если бы Господь исполнил ее желание; но больная она чахоткой; кашляет очень нехорошо; впрочем, теперь лучше ей.
I went to the Novodevichy Monastery at two o'clock and spent the whole time there until half past eight. They listened closely about the Mission. What kind mothers! They promised to paint an iconostasis for the school Church in the Mission House as soon as I asked for Vladyka Isidore's blessing.
I spent the rest of the time at Gr's until 10 p.m. Putyatina, where, at first, I found only Olga Evfimovna. How she longs to serve in the Mission and how useful she would be if the Lord would grant her wish, but she is sick with consumption; she coughs very badly; however, she is better now.
Reflections:
If anyone thinks the life of a missionary is boring, this proves otherwise.
I’m grateful my patron saint had to deal with sickness gracefully, I’m very sick right now. Pray for me.
